The sinking of the HMAS Sydney

Tom Lewis
HMAS Sydney was the pride of the fleet during the Second World War. A light cruiser and one of Australia’s main combat vessels. On the 19th November 1941, off the coast of Western Australia, The Sydney engaged in a fierce and bloody battle with the German raider Kormoran. Following this action, The Sydney failed to return to port. An extensive search and rescue carried out, but the warship had disappeared with all 645 men on board. Whilst the battle lasted little more than an hour, this single ship engagement remains Australia’s greatest naval disaster.

More Australian servicemen died in the battle between the German raider Kormoran and the light cruiser HMAS Sydney than perished in the Vietnam War. It was not until 2008 that the wreck was discovered. The passage of time between the sinking and the discovery led to numerous mystery and conspiracy theories, all of which started replacing the truth. Now, with an explanation of how those on board lived, fought, and died, this book tells the full story.

Saving Lieutenant Kennedy

Brett Mason
On a moonless night in August 1943, a US torpedo boat commanded by Lt John F Kennedy, on patrol in Solomon Islands, was rammed by a Japanese destroyer. Left clinging to wreckage within sight of Japanese encampments, the eleven surviving members of Kennedy’s crew eventually struggled ashore on a small uninhabited island. Missing, presumed dead, behind enemy lines, with no food or water, and with several injured, the future looked bleak for the shipwrecked Americans. Fortunately, Australian ‘coast watcher’ Lt Reg Evans witnessed the immediate aftermath of the collision from his nearby jungle hideaway. Working under the searching eye of the Japanese military, over the next five days Evans and two Solomon Islander scouts — Eroni Kumana and Biuku Gasa — located Kennedy and his crew and ensured their rescue.

This story of wartime bravery and survival helped create JFK’s legend and paved his way to the White House. It also shone a spotlight on Australia and America’s shared wartime experience. In Saving Lieutenant Kennedy, Brett Mason, author of Wizards of Oz, sets the heroic rescue and its colourful aftermath against the background of the Pacific war and the birth of the Australia–US alliance, which remains as vital today as when Kennedy and Evans first shook hands.

Meth road

Conor Woodman
A wild and dangerous ride from the world’s main meth source, a lawless Asian narco-state, to its most valuable Australia. When he received an SOS from a friend kidnapped in a dark corner of Asia, journalist Conor Woodman began a journey that would lead him to the most dangerous and least understood place on Wa State, a lawless enclave of Myanmar that neither the government nor the army dare to enter, and a hotbed of vice and corruption.

Conor embarks on a deadly undercover investigation to discover what is being cooked up in this far-flung jungle state. The answer is methamphetamine – tonnes of it. But where is the meth’s final destination? Billions of dollars of it are shipped to Australia, the world’s most lucrative drug market. The addicts have no idea that the burning rocks they crave have travelled 10,000 kilometres to fill their pipes.

In Australia, Conor looks beyond the terrifying statistics to discover a cast of cooks, dealers and users in ordinary neighbourhoods, trapped in the meth economy, and the cops, doctors and families fighting the world’s most destructive narcotic.

Meth Road is the real Breaking Bad . It’s a journey into a hidden and fascinating narco-state that is the world’s main source of crystal meth, and a wild ride following the obscene wealth and destruction paving the drug’s road into Australia.

Stop them dead

Peter James
A ruthless crime. A race against time. When a young farmer confronts intruders in the middle of the night he has no idea that just minutes later he will be left dying in a pool of blood. What’s more chilling is what the perpetrators were willing to kill for.

At the scene of the crime, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace soon realises this is no isolated robbery gone wrong but the tip of the iceberg of a nationwide crime wave, in which ruthless organised gangs are making more money from the illegal trade in dogs than drugs. A trade which pits him against some ruthless people who will kill anyone who gets in their way, because where there is greed, there is murder.
